Ma’at Youth Academy’s youth interns participated in the program “The Sweet Life on San Francisco Bay” given by Ranger Joseph Rich. The 60 minute walk through the Crissy Field Marsh with Ranger Joseph allowed the youth to discover the benefits of the San Francisco Bay both to the environment and the community.

The youth were able to explore mudflats, rocks and open water, while learning the benefits of each and why each specific piece allows our civilization to exist today. Youth interns leaned about the importance of urban runoff and why people shouldn’t throw trash in the streets. They learned about the pathway of trash, from the street to the water drain and eventually the marsh.

During the walk, Ranger Joseph explained the benefits of the San Francisco Bay; talking about the importance of the bay to provide us with jobs, food, water, an economy, tourism and great weather along the bay area. The walk allowed the youth to contrast the restored Crissy Field Marsh and the health of the marsh compared to the Breuner Marsh located at Point Pinole Park.

The youth really enjoyed the walk and the talk. The trip would be a great culmination to the Community and Global ecology program provided by MYA to local high schools, because it would give them a sense of the San Francisco bay as discussed in the CGE curriculum
